sit. stay. down.
In October 2017, “sit. stay. down.” premiered as in a joint-MFA candidate dance concert titled “Taking UP Space”. “sit. stay. down.” is a 30-minute MFA thesis concert choreographed by Vivian Kim in collaboration with her dancers. This concert was created from a narrative perspective of the choreographer. This work was a result of personal experiences and the research of philosophies and the lexicon of ancient Chinese philosopher Confucius’s Analects (or prescriptions) for Women. These age old philosophies have been a staple for East Asian/Asian-American women’s life-style, behavior, self--worth and more.
Born into a traditional South Korean family that subconsciously values the Confucius Analects for Women, while being raised in the United. States, this piece explores the personal experience of juxtaposing life-styles and life-expectations of East Asian/Asian-American women.
